Re: an Aboriginal Voice to Parliament and a Makarrata (Truth-telling and Treaty negotiation oversight) Commission

Dear Minister,

In 2019, a meeting of the Uniting Church in Australia Synod of NSW.ACT, involving over 300 representatives from Presbyteries across NSW and the ACT, by consensus, passed a resolution to:

- Urge the NSW State Government and the ACT Government each to establish a process of agreement-making between those governments and First Nations, and provide a means for truth-telling about the history of Australia’s First Peoples; and,

- Urge the Commonwealth Government to implement

a) the establishment of a First Nations Voice enshrined in the Constitution to empower First Peoples to have a greater say in policy and legislation which governs their affairs and, in so doing, improve their autonomy and prosperity; and

b) the establishment of a Makarrata Commission to supervise a process of agreement-making between governments and First Nations, and provide a means for truth-telling about the history of Australia’s First Peoples.

In supporting the Statement from the Heart, we acknowledge that supporting Australia’s First Peoples inherently requires recognition of their right to self-determination.

We acknowledge that each First Nation must have the ability to determine their social, cultural and political views and aspirations, and the ability to manage their own affairs as sovereign peoples.

In light of the above, I ask that you use your position of influence to support the Constitutional Change required to enable Australia’s First Peoples to have a self-determined Voice to Parliament, and to support the establishment of a Makarrata Commission.
